Generally use APA format for research citations, but other discipllines may require MLA, Chicago, or other formats. Here are some examples for MLA citation of some notable RPG books...

As per here for the MLA format:

https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/06

Basic Book Format:

Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date.

So, the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition of the Players Handbook would look like this:

Gygax, Gary. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook. TSR, 1978.

For the 6th printing (blue cover, wizard in white figthing flying creatures):

Gygax, Gary. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook. 1978. TSR, 1980.

If interested in APA formatting, see here.
