What is D&D?
by Hawke Robinson published Apr 29, 2017 last modified Jun 27, 2020 02:22 PM — filed under: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
Dungeons and Dragons™ (commonly known as D & D™) is an elaborate fantasy game which evolved from the war games popular in the late 1950's. Instead of a historical battlefield and battle, D&D™ games are fought in the minds of the players as the DM (dungeon master, or god) sets the stage in the fantasy world. Each player assumes the identity of the character he creates. His creature is based on chance roll of the dice. Each character will have six basic abilities: strength, intelligence, wisdom, constitution, dexterity, and charisma. The manual guideline will determine whether the character will be "good" or "evil."

2005 (March) - Working Hard at Play - Kestrel
by Hawke Robinson published May 14, 2018 last modified Jul 12, 2020 07:50 AM — filed under:
Many educators acknowledge the learning potential of out-of-school literacies. Here, I'd like to discuss the merits of roleplaying games (RPGs). The genre is very broad with games such as Star Wars, Call of Cthulhu, Lord of the Rings, and Stargate SG-1 produced by a variety of companies. The oldest formal roleplaying game is Dungeons & Dragons® which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, in 2004. This is the best selling game of its type. Currently, there are over 4 million players worldwide, ranging in age from preteens to senior citizens. These are the players of the paper-based, book product, not the computer game variants. I'll draw my specific examples from the newest edition of the game (version 3.5 published in 2003), but the general points are applicable to any RPG.

Tabletop RPG Recreation Therapy Example Scenario - Visual Impairment
by Hawke Robinson published Feb 25, 2013 last modified Apr 02, 2018 06:54 PM — filed under: , , , , , , , , ,
This is an excerpt from the RPG Handbook of Practice book I have been working on. This section is for clients with significant to complete visual impairment due to traumatic brain injury to the occipital lobe. It can be extrapolated for the whole range of visual impairments. The client wants to participate in a non-therapy-setting leisure activity of tabletop role-playing gaming. The Recreation Therapist will need to evaluate and write up the potential challenges and modifications that may be necessary for the client to participate in this activity with as little difficulty as possible....
