A mid-level position. We have constant need for volunteer research assistants for our many research projects.

A mid-level position. The Volunteer Level 1 Research Assistant will learn to help with the design, implementation, and assessment of RPG Research's many research projects.

Volunteer Research Assistant I

A mid-level position. The Research Assistant I will help with taking observational notes during RPG sessions, help design, implement, and assess research projeccts, and otherwise work on various projects in accordance with RPG Research standards.

Department(s): Research

Location(s): Greater Spokane, Washington area.

Reports to: Research Staff and Primary Investigator PI).


General Purpose

Volunteer will engage in research on the latest information available about the effects and uses of role-playing games, their potenttial educational and therapeutic uses, and various original RPG Research projects.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Take observation notes of research participants/players/game-masters, group interpersonal issues.
  • Data entry
  • Lilterature reviews
  • Attend either in-person, or via remote access, at least one free training session / administrative meeting per week (3-4 hours)
  • Availability for at least 1 research project per month, and able to work at least 12 hours per moth (average 3 hours per week) on assigned research tasks.
  • Strongly self-motivated
  • Strong collaborative work ethic
  • Reliable schedule compliance
  • Prior research experience in any field


Education and Training


  • At least 1 year experience with a research study from any field.
  • Must pass background check before allowed to access non-public research data.
  • Research literature review skill
  • Strong data entry skills
  • Assertive (not aggressive) presence with confident but warm, friendly, empathetic, and compassionate communication style.


Optional but helpful:

  • Prior experience with role-playing games (any formats)
  • Training/experience in therapeutic recreation / recreation therapy field
  • Training/experience in psychology, health, social, or similar sciences.
  • Experience with various assessment tools.


 * Formats include: tabletop (RPG), live-action (LARP), computer-based (CRPG), and solo adventure books and modules (SABM).

Working Conditions

Game Master will frequently work at RPG Research offices, or other locations including but not limited to:

  • Remote

  • Conventions
  • Libraries
  • Community centers
  • Educational institutions
  • Care facilities
  • Mobile Facility, the Wheelchair Friendly RPG Trailer at various locations


Hours: Training: 3-6 hours per week free training (we offer 2 training sessions per week, require attending at least one per week)


Compensation: Volunteer (no financial compensation), free training.
